Frequently asked questions
How is the total fuel cost calculated?
Litres = distance ÷ 100 × L/100km, then cost = litres × price per litre. Example: 500 km at 8 L/100km uses 40 litres; at 1.75 per litre that is a 70.00 total.
How does MPG convert to L/100km?
The tool uses the exact convention 1 mpg(US) = 235.215 L/100km, i.e. L/100km = 235.215 ÷ mpg. A car rated 25 mpg(US) therefore equals about 9.41 L/100km. Note the figures are for US gallons; an imperial-gallon mpg value would need a different constant.
How is the cost split between people?
Equally: cost per person = total fuel cost ÷ number of people. Four people sharing a 70.00 trip each pay 17.50. Enter 1 if you are driving alone to see the full cost per person.
Are tolls, parking or wear included?
No. The calculator prices fuel only. Add tolls, parking, maintenance and depreciation separately for a complete trip budget, and use a real-world consumption figure — city driving usually consumes noticeably more than the official combined cycle.
